Sue Hanson
Sue’s work with the abstract beauty of microscopic rock samples recognised the other side of the story inside the rock, not only its mineral composition but also the ‘life in a grain of sand’ revealed by the shapes, colours and patterns of the microscopic slice.
The resulting photos are most stunning viewed as 110cm x 77cm canvasses, however they have also been printed in a series of smaller works on fine art paper, and have recently come to life as the artwork for a series of 8GB credit-card style flash drives.
More information about Sue and her unique images is available at www.hansonmineralphotos.com

Observation and beauty of our land
89cm x 27cm, mixed media
My motivation for painting , is my great love for my native country, I am engrossed in the observation and beauty. and these qualities are evident in my work. The many facets and changing colours of our remarkable country including the brilliant ochres of our centre, and the electric blues of our mountains, and the sapphires of the seas which surround us. This electric kaleidoscope inspires me. and my artist’s goals are to make you stop Think and Feel- to see something from a different perspective which emphasizes, atmosphere and shadow. The tonalist style employs a distinctive technique by use of colour’s middle values as opposed to stronger contrast and high chroma, resulting in an understated and compelling overall effect .The tonalist subject matter is not always entirely apparent, there is no effort to communicate a message or narrate a story., each sensitively chosen colour , composition and line is arranged to create an intriguing visual poem.

Happy Forest (2011), 51cm x 51cm, acrylic on canvas
The themes behind my work come from a child-like and innocent place, where fairytales, myths and concepts from nature are free to roam all over the canvas with loads of colour and form. I express these stories in a contemporary, abstracted and whimsical manner with some representation and hints of surrealism. I am motivated by story book characters, the natural world and the limitless vault of daydreams I hold in my imagination. My current work is using lines and colour to suggest hidden elements within the earth. The lines are used to imply longevity and freedom, movement and independence allowing some of the strokes to evolve into distinct objects to illustrate a type of transformation inside the constraints of the circular shape. I enjoy using acrylic as my main painting medium onto stretched canvas. I have recently however, begun to experiment with new materials such as ply wood, vinyl record and other mixed media to give the artwork a new dimension or feel.
